Dalma Cartagena's Open House Slow Food Terra Madre fund raising event March 23, 2014

On March 23, 2014; Dalma Cartagena, her organic agriculture students & parents, and community members held a fund raising event to send (2) students to Europe. Today they were able to raise $580.00, which brings a total of $1,805.00.  They will be an observer at the 2014 Slow Food Salone del Gusto / Terra Madre event. Dalma and her students will travel to Torino, Italy; and represent Puerto Rico as an observer of this worldwide gathering for organic local foods. This international gathering of chefs, organizers, local food advocates, teachers, organic farmers & producers; begins Oct.23 - 27, 2014       ( http://salonedelgustoterramadre.slowfood.com/  ).

For many years, Dalma has taught young students the art of organic farming; at the S.U. Botijas School in Orocovis. She has dedicated her adult career, to educating and sharing the knowledge of organic agriculture to Puerto Ricans. Her work is truly inspirational, because she not only teach young students at the school; they have developed a small farm and cooking facility. Hopefully, Slow Food International will have Dalma's students showcase their incredible garden to this international organic food community. This opportunity to expose young minds, to a global farmers market; can be life changing for their spirit.

Dalma's work with our future organic farmers, is so critical to our humanity, especially in the age of genetic foods. She is so very fortunate to be surrounded with so much hope and optimism each day. For those who haven't yet seen Dalma's school garden project in person, here's a sample video of their amazing accomplishments    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5iXm2KpFFrI

Slow Healing presents: " Dance to Heal" with Carmen Robles Herrera

On March 1, 2014; Slow Healing presented the talents of Holistic Dancer and Psychotherapist: Carmen Robles Herrera MS Ed, MSW, R-LCSW. Carmen gave an incredible presentation on how dance can miraculously transform imbalances. Carmen demonstrated how dance has no age limit and she truly rock the 4th anniversary of the Old San Juan Market with her passion. Since she was a child growing up in Puerto Rico, Carmen has channeled her inner dancer to help herself navigate through challenges and to celebrate life. She believes dance is an organic expression of the spirit and soul that we all hold deep in our body. Carmen shares her love for Puerto Rico and she feels it is blessed with a culture abundant with music and dance. If we open our hearts and listen to the rhythm of the island, we can heal many of the issues we face on our daily encounters. Carmen, we thank you for connecting us to a simple, natural and basic way to heal the soul. We also want to give a special thanks to Laura Daen, Aurora Sastre, Javier Rivera, Cindy Golbert, all the Old San Juan market volunteers, and the staff of the Old San Juan museum.

Healers helping Healers

Slow Healing presents:  Healers helping Healers, is a opportunity for healers of different modalities (body/ energy work, farmers, singer, story tellers, chefs, dancers, sound therapy, etc.); come together and provide each other with a session of love & compassion. Basically, anyone who use their skills for the purpose of healing the soul of another being is welcome.

On Dec.15, 2013, Abadha Lila, Leslie Dominguez,  Abdiel Du' Collage and Bartus Allen hosted a Healers helping Healers event at Espacio Dinamico. Espacio Dinamico is located in the heart of Old San Juan and has the atmosphere of a soulful cathedral. Providing the community with martial arts, dance and meditation. These healers were able to start the major holiday season with a full battery, using the tools of expression dance movement, oracle readings, aromatherapy, bodywork, drawings, music, and laughter. This was a great opportunity for healers to receive energetic work from other compassionate healers .

This event also coincided with Terra Madre Day...a world wide day celebrating local foods. After the session, we'll had a small lunch together.  http://www.slowfood.com/terramadreday/

Junior Barefoot Doctors

On November 10, 2013; Elizabeth Isea, Luis J. Corona, Elizama Montalvo, MD, Lillian ( Lalla) Ortiz, and Bartus Allen have collaborated on a project to assist young adults on the art of healing. The Junior Barefoot Doctors was designed to help young people embrace healing in a natural simple fashion. These (5) home school students ( Jean Gabriel Audinot, Genesis Veronica Colon, Carla Veronica Colon, Gerriane Ayala Sanchez, Geraldine Ayala Sanchez, Alondra Sanchez Figueroa )  learned how massage and shiatsu can greatly improve the health and well being of their family and friends.

What is a BareFoot Doctor?
Barefoot Doctors is a term developed in China in the late 1940's. Basically farmers received minimal basic medical and paramedical training and worked in rural villages in the People's Republic of China. Their purpose was to bring health care to rural areas where urban-trained doctors would not settle. They promoted basic hygienepreventive health care, and family planning and treated common illnesses. The name comes from southern farmers, who would often work barefoot in the rice paddies. This term was created in China, but many countries around the world have a similar approach to healing their community members.

Origin of Slow Healing

Early in 2013, Slow Food Boricua wanted to highlight the essential quantities of Health ( food, community, mindful living, awareness, etc.), and we approach Slow Food International, to see if they wanted to include a health campaign to their movement. Slow Food International loved the idea, but they had ask Puerto Rico to develop a campaign and if Slow Healing is successful they would expand the Slow Healing campaign into a international movement. You can read the actual email message below. Further information about Slow Healing, you can read on the Slow Healing weblog: http://slowhealing.blogspot.com/

Hello Elizama and Bartus,
as promised, i talked with Paolo di Croce about the Slow Healing
campaign. We agreed about the fact that this is an important issue for
Slow Food, but in the last years we haven't developed anything like
that. I checked in example with "Slowfood", our italian magazine, and
we haven't published any article on the issue in the past. I spoke
also with Silvia Ceriani, the head of our Communication Office. We all
agree that we should work on this thanks to your help, and i think we
can have two levels:

1) the local/regional level: in which SF Boricua can develop
autonomically this campaign (as you said organizing some activities at
the market and/or compromising others countries as Cuba as well). Of
course SF International will give visibility to these
events/activities through our websites.

2) the international level: we think that we cannot open a campaign
now (like GMO or LAND GRABBING) because we don't have so far too much
"background" on this, like articles, materials, other Convivia or TM
communities working on this issue. But, we can begin to give
visibility to this issue i.e. publishing some of the articles that
you'll write, giving visibility to your activities, trying to link you
with existing and future groups that will have the same focus. I think
that if we work on this issue together, we'll have material and a
network to start a new campaign within the next 12-24 months. What do
you think?

At the moment i shared the documents with Silvia, and she'll send them
to Andrea Pezzana, the nutritionist and teacher at University of
Gastronomic Sciences that normally collaborate with us in nutritional
issues, to have his feedback.

So, we still have to find a path to walk, but i think that step by
step we can work on Slow Healing.

I wait for your comments and thank you two for your work.

Best, Andrea
